As access to information about higher education continues to expand, real-world experiences and direct connections with universities give students valuable perspectives on their post-secondary options. These experiences also help them gradually identify pathways that align with their abilities, interests and aspirations. 

At Tesla, the University and Career Guidance Programme is integrated throughout the learning journey, particularly across the MYP and DP years. Through university engagement activities, exploration of different fields of study and opportunities to understand future academic pathways, students are encouraged to take a more informed and proactive approach to planning for life after high school. 

Broadening Perspectives on Fields of Study and University Options 

Every student has different interests, strengths and aspirations. Exposure to a wide range of information about academic fields and university environments therefore gives students a stronger foundation to ask questions, identify areas of interest and gain a clearer understanding of the options available to them. 

As part of Tesla’s University and Career Guidance activities, in September, Tesla students had the opportunity to connect directly with representatives from international universities, including Aston University and Ulster University. Through these sessions, students explored academic programmes, different fields of study and potential career opportunities beyond university. Direct conversations with university representatives also encouraged students to ask questions and seek information that is relevant to their individual interests and aspirations. 

From Exploration to a Strategy for the Future 

University and career planning should not begin only when it is time to submit an application. It is a continuous process of gaining experiences, exploring information and developing a deeper understanding of oneself throughout the learning journey. 

The value of university guidance therefore extends beyond simply providing information about universities. More importantly, these experiences give students an opportunity to begin developing a strategy for their future based on the areas they are genuinely interested in. 

From exploring fields of study and understanding programme requirements to identifying the experiences and skills they need to develop, students can gradually build a clearer picture of their pathway beyond high school. For MYP students, these experiences provide more time to explore possibilities and broaden their options. For DP students, they can serve as a foundation for refining their goals and taking a more proactive approach to the transition to university. 

IB - A Foundation for an International Learning Journey 

Tesla’s University and Career Guidance journey is grounded in the IB framework, which supports students in developing independent thinking, research, communication and ownership of their learning. These capabilities are important as students transition to university and continue to pursue their areas of academic and professional interest. 

From MYP to DP, students gradually become familiar with a learning approach that emphasises critical thinking, connecting knowledge across contexts and taking initiative in the learning process. These capabilities not only support students in their current studies, but also provide a foundation for adapting to the diverse demands of higher education in the future.
