Newsletter 27 May, 2022

Congratulations to the Class of 2022! Our Grade 5 students are the first primary graduating class at Tesla and will always be part of our school’s history.

Every student, parent, and staff member in the Tesla community should be proud of what they have been able to accomplish during this very challenging year. In addition to transitioning from online learning at home to the dynamics of being back on campus, the whole community continued to adjust to the higher expectations inherent to the Primary Years Program (PYP).

As I reflect on the year, the one thing that stands out is how our students and teachers embraced the opportunities to demonstrate the attributes of an IB Learner Profile. From risk-taking throughout the inquiry process to principled, open-minded, caring communicators within the classroom learning environment, everyone in the community modeled what it means to be a global citizen.

The conclusion of the academic year 2021 – 2022 is upon us and I want to thank everyone in the Tesla community for their contributions.

Please enjoy a safe, relaxing, fruitful, and much-deserved summer break!

Kindest regards,

Ms. Doan Thi Huynh Hanh

Grade 5 Homeroom Teacher

This month marks a very special milestone for Grade 5 students at Tesla, an exhibition of learning activities under the theme “Sharing the Planet”. The students prepared very early to have a successful exhibition. Together with their Mentors, they discussed key ideas and action plans to contribute to the community.

From the process of researching and learning about the selected topics “Conservation of plants and animals”, the students started making presentations, drawing pictures, making 3D products, modeling clay, and drawing on t-shirts, cloth bags, paper bags, plastic cups… to propagate to the community the goal of the groups’ action plans.

In addition, the field trip to Nam Cat Tien forest helped students expand and consolidate their knowledge, gain an understanding of the world around them, and have interesting experiences and unforgettable joys whenever they remember studying at Tesla. The students became the real owners of the exhibition when they themselves designed, decorated, displayed products, wrote invitations to parents, and teachers, … confidently presented the group’s products. Their work is more practical and meaningful when they themselves used the proceeds from the auction of their products to send to the Animal Conservation Fund of Nam Cat Tien forest. The students hand-delivered the donation to the Director of Nam Cat Tien Forest Ecological Reserve. This marks their maturity.

Closing the last days of the school year, the students bravely and confidently became students of an International Baccalaureate school, worthy of being global citizens in the future.

KG Homeroom Teacher

At the end of the unit “Sharing the Planet”, KG students had a field trip to Lai Day Refill Station. With this experiential activity, they listened to sharing about the green lifestyle ideas that the store had implemented. They also studied plastic alternatives, eco-friendly products, and bookmarks made from waste paper. “Finding Hidden Treasure” in particular has created curiosity and surprise in students. This trip helped students be aware of protecting the environment; now they know we can use natural and reusable products, and reduce plastic waste.

Early Years Teacher

Children are always attracted and want to discover movements around them. Therefore, the learning project on the movement of vehicles has met the needs of children to explore and learn. Children not only passively receive knowledge, but also have the opportunity to express their understanding, life experiences, and interests when participating in different activities related to the project. Students can practice yoga poses to simulate the means of transport, which is also an interesting activity that attracts children. Besides, a plane observation field trip has created an extremely interesting experience for the students.

School is so much fun!

Every day at school, there will be new and exciting things for students to discover. What will it be like when children go to school in colorful pajamas and feel as comfortable as their home? Get ready for the exciting summer days, Tesla Early Years students had a remarkable lovely Pyjama Day. Cute pajamas created a cozy atmosphere, a space to help the children get closer to each other and their teachers!

LRC’s messageLISTENING TO YOUR CHILD READ

How to help your child:

– If the text seems too difficult, read the first part before expecting her/him to read it independently.

– Allow your child to be in control – holding the book, tracking the text, turning the pages.

– Share the responsibility for reading by taking turns. You read a page, then he/she reads a page.

– If your child doesn’t recognize a word, help him/her to:

  • Reread the previous sentence or a few sentences so he/she can think of a word that makes sense;
  • Leave it out and read on, then go back and guess a word that fits;
  • Use the first letter or first few letters to sound out the word.

– If your child guesses an appropriate word that makes sense, but it is not the right word, let him/her continue reading.

– If your child guesses an inappropriate word, stop him/her at the end of the sentence and ask, “Did that sound right? Did that word make sense?”

– Be a patient listener and wait for your child to attempt difficult words before jumping in.

– Limit the reading time and make it enjoyable.
