Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS) is one of the three core elements that all students must complete as part of the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (DP).
Throughout the DP, CAS encourages students to engage in activities outside of their regular studies to foster well-rounded personal development. While not formally assessed with grades, students are required to reflect on their CAS experiences and provide clear evidence of achieving key learning outcomes throughout their participation.
The Structure of CAS
CAS comprises three components, and these activities often intertwine:
- Creativity: Engaging in activities that foster imagination and creative abilities, such as painting, singing, dancing, writing, or crafting. These activities help students express themselves and learn to be more innovative in all situations.
- Activity: Participating in sports or physical activities like playing football, badminton, or swimming. These activities help students improve their health, maintain physical fitness, and learn teamwork.
- Service: Taking part in activities that help the community, such as tutoring peers, participating in school volunteer programs, or assisting the elderly, children, or protecting the environment. These activities help students learn to care for others and contribute to society.
The CAS Project
Students are required to undertake a CAS project that incorporates at least one of the three components. This project requires students to demonstrate initiative and perseverance, while also learning how to work in teams, solve problems, and make decisions.
The Significance of CAS
CAS helps students develop essential life skills while providing opportunities for them to contribute to their community. It’s an integral part of helping students learn to maintain a balance between academic study and other activities, thus preparing them for a successful and responsible future.
